The Asian Woman Film Festival: Tongues on Fire

Tongues on fire, the annual film festival which celebrates excellence, performance and achievements of South Asian women in cinema, presents its 10th Film Festival across a variety of locations in London with a Press Launch on Tuesday 19th February at the NFT with Actress, Writer and Filmmaker Meera Syal at 7 pm. The BAFTA  will host the Opening Gala Weekend March 8th & 9th.

This year Directors notes: Your forward to the Festival written by Dr. Pushpinder Chowdhry and Harvinder Nath Festival Directors

This year marks our 10th anniversary film festival and TOF is extremely thrilled to begin once again with an Opening Gala Weekend at Bafta. We are proud to present the London premiere of Hope and A Little Sugar and welcome the talented director Tanuja Chandra and actress Mahima Chaudhry to our festival. Our Opening Gala Weekend continues with The World Unseen, a film made by an all-women crew, and we are privileged to present a Q&A with the director Shamim Sarif and producer Hanan Kattan. This year we are delighted be honouring Meera Syal for her contributions to film, television and theatre. It will be the first of our yearly profiles of Asian filmmakers who have pushed the boundaries in film and media. This exciting month-long season showcases work by women or stories where women are the central protagonists in order to encourage debate reflecting real-life issues. The festival presents the British premiers of Mira Nair’s Mirabhai Production of AIDS Jagoo and Bhavna Talwar’s Dharm, and an opportunity to screen the Vanaja and Rituparno Ghosh’s Dosar. It is an eclectic programme that includes our ten year anniversary Photo Exhibition entitled Reel Women: Reflections of Ten Years of Tongues on Fire. We are also presenting documentaries, a short film competition, and Q&A sessions, and this year also features a special education series titled, Guru Dutt Film: Feminine Focus. In our tenth year, we are taking a great leap to embrace new technology, which will support, develop and promote the digital filmmaking revolution for our feature films and short film competition. TOF is educating budding filmmaking by connecting them with industry experts networking events in association with our Short Film Competition. It has been an excellent experience celebrating women in film for the last ten years, especially making Asian women visible in media and arts. Tongues on Fire has helped to mediate a variety of positive images and representations of Asian Women, creating a sense of self esteem and confidence in cultural amalgamation. We’re truly excited to share with you the newest and latest films, special events and honoured guests from Tongues on Fire this year.
