The Films title can be translated to say many things its literal translation and UK release title was Beauty by day, which would be in keeping with the film its self, as it comes up to forty years since it was made and has its obvious re-releases and its squeal  Belle Toujours the film its self still stands as one of the great films in Cinema history, Based on Joseph Kessel honest and erotic book tackling a wide range of subjects and feelings while being typically French, In terms of the film the style and presentation and it clear content it is a monument to the fact cinema can cover many subjects in one film and present even the most extreme in a beautiful and sensitive way that make the watcher think as well as feel. Every scene is built with an extreme, Parisian elegance that mirrors Séverine’s refined beauty and this sophisticated beauty is used to tell a story of shocking sexuality, sordid and aggressive chauvinism, and petty social hypocrisy.

Belle De Jour (Paperback)
by Joseph Kessel
Paperback: 142 pages
Publisher: Duckworth & Co; Reprint edition
Release Date: 09/08/2007

This is the classic work of erotic fiction by one of France's greatest writers, long unavailable and more timely than ever. The startling and groundbreaking novel that inspired Luis Bunuel's film by the same name is finally available once more. In a world that blurs the lines between feminism and female sexuality, "Belle de Jour" remains as vital and controversial today as it was on its 1960 debut. Severine Serizy is a wealthy and beautiful Parisian housewife. She loves her husband, but she cannot share physical intimacy with him, and her vivid sadomasochistic fantasies drive her to seek employment at a brothel. By day, she enacts her customers' wildest fantasies under the pseudonym 'Belle de Jour': in the evenings, she returns home to her chaste marriage and oblivious husband. Famous for its unflinching eroticism, Joseph Kessel's novel continues to offer an eye-opening glance into a unique female psyche.

This is an examination of Louis Bunuel's "Belle de Jour", a piece about a bourgeoise wife who lives a secret afternoon life as a prostitute. The book examines the film and its reflections on truth, fiction and fantasy, and its social insight on the tale of a woman clearing her mind of it's ghosts.
